East Ham baller advances to national Freestyle final

8 May 2003
London, England

Thousands headed down to London’s Earl’s Court 2 Arena last Sunday (May 4th) in the hope of being spotted as one of the nation’s hottest Freestylers and winning the chance to appear on MTV.

After whittling down the thousands of entrants to eight finalists over two sessions, the judges decided that Kenrick Sandy, a basketball freestyler from East Ham, and Abbas Farid, football freestyler from Newport, Gwent were the London Freestyle champions. They stood out from the rest with their blend of stunning skills, attitude and amazing flair with the ball.

The two London Freestyle Champions will now go head to head with the winners of the Manchester Freestyle face-off (taking place at the GMEX in Manchester on Sunday 11th May), in a special final on MTV. This will be screened as an advert on MTV Base for viewers to vote and decide which of the four finalists should be crowned the UK’s Ultimate Freestyle Champion. And win a trip for two to New York to see the NBA’s New York Knicks in action.

Charlie Brooks, spokesperson for Nike UK commented, “The skills on display today have been incredible and these freestylers seem to be becoming more and more innovative, creative and ambitious with the ball – that’s exactly what freestyle is all about.”

Not only were there amazing freestyle tricksters to be seen but some of the UK’s top DJs (DJ Spooney and Shortee Blitz), Live Acts (Abs and Jody Lei) Breakdancers and Beatboxers were their to keep the huge crowds entertained.

As seen in the Nike adverts with Ronaldinho and the Stickman, Freestyle is all about rhythm, attitude and stunning ball moves; it’s about self -expression. It’s not just about doing the tricks; it’s about doing them in style.
