2 July 2003
London, England

Steve Bucknall, a former LA Lakers player and graduate of North Carolina, is bringing the Tar Heel brand of college basketball to the UK.

Featuring Hall of Fame coach Dean E. Smith, the winningest coach in the history of college basketball, Bucknall Essential Skills presents The “Carolina Experience” taking place at the National Sports Centre on Thursday 14th August to Sunday 17th August 2003.

The 4 days will include a 3-day basketball camp for boys and girls aged 14 to 18, followed by the coach’s seminar, including lectures from guest of honour Coach Dean Smith.

Other confirmed speaker’s are JR Reid - a former North Carolina player with 9 years NBA experience, Kevin Cadle who entered the Guinness Book of Records as the most successful coach in UK history, Chris Finch coach of the year and BBL champion for 2003 with Sheffield Sharks, current England Senior Men’s basketball head coach Laszlo Nemeth, and Ed Percival one of only six master trainers certified by the Society of NLP.

Coach Smith confirmed, "Steve Bucknall has played an important part both in my life, and within in the game of basketball, so I’m delighted he’s following up an excellent playing career by passing on his knowledge and experience to the next generation of players. I am very much looking forward to working with him to develop our great game in England."

The “Carolina Experience” is the biggest camp of its kind ever to reach these shores. Coaches and players will have the opportunity to meet current and former England Internationals – on hand to pass on their knowledge to the young talent in today’s game.

Camp founder Steve Bucknall added, “The Carolina Experience will help players and coaches with the principles of defensive and offensive skill development, all fundamental tools for basketball. The backbone of any successful player is his ability to master fundamentals.”
